Communication across 3 different time zones can be very tricky. Finding a timeslot for a joined phone conference is near to impossible. Email has lost much of its charm because we just get too many emails. So how to get a lot of information spread across the globe?
I never tried video as a means of communication before but I felt the time was ripe to give it a shot. Puh, there are so many apps out there to create videos – feeling slightly overwhelmed. Touchcast looked cool but found out the hard way that this app doesn’t actually allow you to share only with a small group of people. The only way to publish is to share it with the whole world. And well the videos contained company internal news so that was a little too wide-spread. At least I had some practise now and re-did the videos using VideoLab.
It ended up being more time-consuming than I had expected so I decided to do a little math on the ROI. For my own sanity as after all I do get paid to work not to have fun trying out new apps :-) So here my math: My videos covered 4 different topics and total length was 13.2 minutes. If 80 people would have gotten onto a conference call for our usual 1 hour than that would have added up to 80 hours. And you know what – 60 minutes could have even been pretty tight for 4 topics.
Now instead people could watch at their own convenience and needed only 17.6 hours to receive the same level of information. Plus all the people that weren’t able to join the conference had easy access to the information as well. I did not spend 62.4 hours creating these videos so the ROI was positive. Yeah :-)
They were certainly very “home-made” but the first responses were more than encouraging…
“fantastic, loved the video’s – my best quote “and that is a shit load of images” :)
“great work, feeling energised and believe it will do the same for others”
“I must say, it’s all there – I laughed, it got me thinking and listening – the last video is a definite highlight.”
“Hey, the videos are cool! The last one is really amusing!”
“Your videos were great :-) I am surely inspired by your videos. Please do not hesitate and share those with people. It is great way to share your knowledge with the team. You motivate me to work with you and the team to create more videos. Keep up the good work”
“I watched those. Very well done and made my day. This is a great way to share with team members. Thanks a lot.”
So if you have something to say and you want to get the word out – try video!
