This morning I saw a post from Peter Shankman on Facebook picturing a happy girl at her graduation with a sweet smile and a sign. A sign that caused quite some commotion. It even made Peter sigh and lose his faith in the world. He commented: “Sigh. Another reason I no longer wish to live on this planet.”
It put a big smile on my face. The reactions of his followers are quite priceless as well. Some think it must be an insider joke other’s argue she is too stupid ever to get a job. Someone even wrote: “She’s pretty. Not much else matters when it comes to hiring today. She’ll do fine, because most managers don’t know the difference either.”
I do not know whether she did it on purpose or not. She might be dyslectic, blond or smarter than all of us together. What is for sure is that she got me smiling right back at her.
As part of my writing course, I’ve been reading a lot about spelling lately. I speak 3.5 languages, but I cannot write any of them correctly. So starting my blog I had to do a lot of homework (. . . I still do).
Lately I clipped several lovely Punctuation stories. Here are three of my favorites:
Seen on Pinterest:
Ha ha, lovely. Both are equally right.
Made me think of last Sunday, when my sister-in-law, was about to eat my mother-in-law alive because she spilled her food everywhere. Perhaps it is mean to find that funny but hey, we’re all humans.
The last one is from the book “Grammatically Correct” (Page 100:)
A quotation from a piece of story from William Somerset Maugham:
My favourite sentence: “She was able to place it [the semi-colon] in such a way that if you were a person of culture with a keen sense of humour, you did not exactly laugh through a horse-collar, but you giggled delightedly, and the greater your culture, the more delightedly you giggled.”
I was truly fascinated about Mrs Albert Forrester, who was so gifted she could turn grammar into humour. Seeing the graduation photo made me think of Mrs Albert Forrester. And realize you needn’t be a person of culture to see the humour in this image :-)
I sure love language . . . It has so many dimensions. It can be beautiful, intriguing, expressive, persuasive, and full of humour.
What a great way to start my day :-)
And the day kept getting better. Thanks Angela for sharing this very cool video with me. It even got me dancing!
Is there anyone else out there with a passion for spelling?
