Part five of the Magic Test of Seven.
I’ve read a lot about the pro’s and cons of setting goals. I can see both sides of the story. For me the truth is – as so often – somewhere in the middle. The balancing act of life. If I don’t plan at all, it is easy to procrastinate. Yet ever so often procrastinating can be joyous as well.
Steve Jobs said: “You can’t connect the dots looking forward you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something: your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. Because believing that the dots will connect down the road will give you the confidence to follow your heart, even when it leads you off the well-worn path.”
So even when we may feel we don’t know, why we are doing, the things we are doing, that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Sometimes things that may seems useless become relevant later on long the line.
But there is a real beauty in channeling your energy as well. Finding things that increase your energy level.
I don’t call them goals. I call them plans. And I like to write them down. When we write down our plans, they become more haptic. When we spell them out and potentially even share them with others, the likelihood, we make time for them increases.
Nonetheless, Eisenhower said: Plans are nothing; planning is everything. So writing down plans does not mean you cannot tweak them. They just give you direction. A clearer line in the middle of your path. You can walk on the line but also anywhere else on that road. You can tweak your plan, take a few D-routes, walk back and start all over again. Everything is allowed. It is your journey.
And here is mine. These are seven things I would like to do in the next seven months:
- Rework the archive of this blog
- Launch bigwigwords.com
- Buy a new camera and experiment with digitalizing old slides and photos
- Join the Acumen course Social Entrepreneurship 101: Discovering Your Passion & Path to Change the World (Anyone interested in joining me?)
- Take a class in the School of Life
- Join a 5-rhythms dance workshop
- Enjoy life; read, chill, hug, love and let my hair dance in the wind
What are your plans? Do you write them down? Did you ever find an old list and find you did not do any of them. Or the opposite? Would love to read your thoughts on planning.
