I am reading a great book about change. It is called Switch – How to Change Things when Change is Hard
The book builds upon a principle called the Elephant and the Rider.
The Elephant represents the emotional part of the brain and the Rider the rational part of the brain. Every person has an elephant and a rider…I love the metaphor.
Well, this morning I woke up at 4 am – no idea why – but thoughts came in lightning speed. By the time, it was 4:30 I had written about six blog posts in my head :-) Then I had to think of the rider and the elephant.
My rider wanted me to get up and start typing. I was so awake; I was clearly not going to fall asleep anymore so I might as well just start getting things on paper rather than just laying there and writing stories in my head.
My elephant though clearly wasn’t of the same opinion. My elephant said chill – hardly anyone even reads your blog. You need sleep. Go back to sleep. It isn’t that important.
Well, who says what is important. It is hard to tell. Whether it is important or not. At 4:44 I looked at my alarm clock again and my rider won. So here I sit, and my rider is happy. And my elephant has decided it is ok. Another night of sleep is just around the corner. You gotto do what you gotto do.
And you gotto love what you gotto do.
Wish you a great day and that your rider and your elephant agree on what you’re doing – at least most of the time.
