Sometimes I cry without a reason.
Just last Friday, it happened again. I played my son a song that my mom had posted on Facebook. A lovely Dutch song that so very well fits my blog theme “embrace”. It’s about having someone that’s always there for you, no matter what. Throughout all the up’s and downs.
I have no particular attachment to this song, but it’s one of those that just goes under your skin. And exactly that happened. Tears silently started rolling down my face. It took a while for my son to even notice, but suddenly he said: “Hey mom, you are crying.” And I said: “Yes, but that’s perfectly fine”. He just gave me a big hug and by the time the song was over I was good again.
Nonetheless, it was a special moment for my son and me, and he brought it up again that evening. He said he nearly had to cry as well. But not because it made him sad.
We talked about why people cry. For all sorts of reasons. We even researched the topic of why women cry more than men do. Apparently women cry on average 50 times a year and men ten times. So women cry a weekly doses and men a monthly dose :) Curious as we are, we went through all the different reasons why that is so. Biologically women have smaller tear ducts, society norms may play a role, and hormones play their part as well.
But the most beautiful comment we found on the web was:
“Tears are a positive representation of who we are. It demonstrates not only our deep emotional connections with our world – past, present, and future – but allows us to visibly celebrate that fact. They are also scientifically proven to make you feel better. So go on and wear your tears with pride. “
Wear your tears with pride. I like that. Whatever you do, do it with pride. Embrace it all {e}.
For any Dutch readers that read my blog. Here’s the song:
May you all have a wonderful Sunday.
