Changing the world is a rather big and bold statement. I love the madness of the statement itself, but it does raise the question of where to start and how to have an impact in the first place.
Rabbi Bunam told his disciples that everyone ought to carry two bags over their shoulders, to either reach into the one or the other, as needed. In the one bag are the words: ‘For my sake was the world created,’ and in the other: ‘I am but dust and ashes.’
I like that thought; we are nothing and we are everything. Sometimes what we do may feel like a tiny drop on a hot stone. Other times we witness how a single word or gesture can change someone’s life. I believe in the sum of all the little things we do.
Here are seven things I aim to do every day:
1. Hug someone
2. Pay it forward
3. Give money, time or just a smile to people that need it
4. Give someone applause
5. Read, write, reflect and be grateful
6. Exercise, sleep & foremost breathe
7. Show those I love that I do so
We can’t all be Mother Theresa’s. But we can be vivid little stars that make each other shine brighter.
